The Yiddish Vinkl will open its 2009-2010 season with a gala concert 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Sabes JCC, 4330 Cedar Lake Rd. S., St. Louis Park.
Violinist and klezmer musician Judith Eisner will dedicate a piece to the memory of beloved member and Yiddishist, Beverly “Bluma” Siegel; cantorial soloist Maggie Burton, accompanied by Charles Lilienfeld, will present Yiddish classics, popular show tunes and a piece for the Jewish New Year; and Sima Shumilovsky, accompanied by ethnic accordionist Mark Stillman, will present freylach hand-clapping, toe-tapping, Yiddish favorites.
The Yiddish Vinkl meets monthly to promote the mameloshen (mother tongue) through history, literature, music, film and life stories. The concentration is on the Yiddish language, but some English is spoken.
Light refreshments will follow the concert and membership forms will be available. Members are free and guests will be charged $3.
