On her new album, Prayer (Sony Classical), Argentine star cellist Sol Gabetta plays a selection of music inspired by Jewish melodies. Ernest Bloch’s “From Jewish Life,” recorded with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, has three movements: Prayer, Supplication and Jewish Song. “I often played ‘Prayer’ as an encore in concert, and could feel that many people in the audience were greatly moved by it,” said Gabetta. “This is music that is both sensual and reflective.” Gabetta also plays works by Shostakovich and Casals on Prayer. You don’t have to be a classical music maven to love Gabetta’s beautiful cello playing. — M.S
