First, religious Israelis refer to “swine flu” as “H1N1” — pigs, of course, are treif.
On Monday, the BBC reported that around 50 spiritual leaders flew over the Jewish state, praying and blowing shofars to ward off the pandemic.

Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri told the Israeli paper Yediot Achronot that the davening flight was designed “to stop the pandemic so people will stop dying from it,” according to the BBC, which added that Israel’s health ministry has tallied more than 2,000 cases of swine flu in the country, with five fatalities.
“We are certain that, thanks to the prayer, the danger is already behind us,” Batzri said.
