The band Anvil was the inspiration for many musicians who went on to become demi-gods of heavy metal music. Steve (Lips) Kudlow and Robb Reiner, two Jewish teens from Toronto, Canada, sealed a pact to rock forever on April 1973. Their musical collaboration, which morphed into the speed metal band Anvil, had its moment of fame in the early 1980s, then foundered in its quest to become part of the rock pantheon. Poor quality record production, incompetent management — whatever the cause, rock fame and riches eluded Anvil.
Now in their 50s, Kudlow and Reiner are still carrying the torch for metal glory. They tell their story in the entertaining documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil, directed by Sacha Gervasi, which screens tonight at the Uptown Theatre in Minneapolis.
Following the 7:15 p.m. Friday, May 8 screening, Anvil will play a live 20-minute set!
