Members of the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest (JHSUM) recently received the latest copy of the group’s journal. Linda Mack Schloff edited the periodical “Who Knew? Stories Unearthed from the Archives,” which offers fascinating glimpses of Jewish life from bygone days. There is a letter from Annalee Weiskopf Wolff’s mother responding to her report of anti-Semitic taunts at Wellesley College, in 1908. Excerpts range from the Dakotas to Twin Cities neighborhoods, and cover the creation of Jewish institutions, along with the inevitable intra-communal squabbles (including the notorious 1990 “Boschwitz letter,” which impugned the Jewishness of Paul Wellstone). The cover image is of workers at Hachshara Farm, near Anoka, in 1936. — M.S.
