Jewish Community Action will kick off a yearlong exploration of shmita and economic justice for the entire Jewish community with an event 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 at Mount Zion Temple, 1300 Summit Ave., St. Paul.
The program, titled “Shmita and the Challenge of Economic Inequality,” will
feature Professor Louis Newman.
Newman will look to Jewish tradition and ethics for a model to address challenges such as rising housing costs, a lack of paid sick leave, college debt, and gaps in wealth and income.
Newman is one of the country’s leading scholars of Jewish ethics. His most recent book is Repentance: The Meaning and Practice of Teshuvah.
