In Between, director Maysaloun Hamoud’s debut feature film, explores the lives of three Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv. Laila (Mouna Hawa) and Salma (Sana Jammelieh) are free spirits enjoying all that Israel’s live life city offers. They are joined by Nour (Shaden Kanboura), a younger religious Muslim who moves into the apartment to be closer to the university. Initially horrified by her roommates’ hard partying lifestyle, she is forced to reassess her engagement to a domineering man from her village. The three women all find themselves “in between” two societies. In Between— available on DVD from Film Movement — was the winner of seven Saphir Awards, the Israeli Oscars, in 2017. — Mordecai Specktor
