The cover photo of The Oxford Illustrated History of the Third Reich (Oxford University Press) depicts Hitler on his “art trip” in Paris, June 1941. The Eiffel Tower looms in the background. Books about World War II, the Nazis and the Holocaust continue to roll off the presses at a steady clip, more than 70 years after this blood-drenched period of history. As editor Robert Gellately, a history professor at Florida State University, points out, this particular volume “is an illustrated history. It uses photographs, paintings, propaganda images, and a host of other such materials as documentary evidence.” Within the book’s 400 pages are some 130 color and black-and-white illustrations gathered from diverse sources. Finally, the chapter on the Holocaust was written by Brown University history professor Omer Bartov, whose most recent book, Anatomy of a Genocide, was reviewed in the AJW’s Feb. 23 edition. — Mordecai Specktor
