Hillel at the University of Minnesota will host “Semitic Idol VI” 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14 at Bnai Emet Synagogue, 3115 Ottawa Ave. S., St. Louis Park. The fundraising event will feature Cantors Barry Abelson of Temple Israel, Art Shragg of Bnai Emet and Jennifer Strauss-Klein of Mount Zion Temple, who will perform in three musical categories followed by critiques from a panel of celebrity judges.
U of M student comedian Greg Berman will serve as the evening’s emcee. Judges will be stand-up comic Laura Thorne, and, back by popular demand, the Twin Cities own Jerry Siegel. Student jazz group Two Fifths will entertain during the reception.
There is also a student component to the competition: Students have been invited to submit videos of themselves performing on Semitic Idol Web site. Voting takes place online April 1-7, and the singer with the highest rating will perform on April 14.
