AJW Staff Report
In late November, Herzl Camp received an award for innovative use of technology to connect alumni and promote camp in the community at the Grinspoon Institute for Jewish Philanthropy’s ninth annual Camping Conference. With more than 350 camp professionals and board leaders from across North America in attendance, Camp Director Anne Hope accepted the Impact in Technology Award on behalf of the organization.
Hope credited the award to Herzl’s volunteer blog team and to the creative young camp staff who have guided Herzl’s social media activities in the last year.
The Herzl blog team posts a different writer’s story, memory or question about camp, or the effect of camp on their adult life. Writers represent all generations and perspectives — from recent camp staff to camper parents to alumni from the 1950s and 1960s. Weekly readership averages more than 1,000. Herzl Camp has been working with the Grinspoon Institute since 2008. In that time, the camp has received $175,000 in matching grants from Grinspoon as well as technical consulting for the camp’s capital campaign.
