From the Strange but True Department: Harpo Marx, the silent member of the Marx Brothers, and surrealist painter Salvador Dali were friends and collaborated on a screenplay for a movie, Giraffes on Horseback Salad. MGM rejected the project; however, the abortive collaboration is now out in graphic novel form from Quirk. Giraffes, the story of Jimmy, a businessman, and his encounter with Surrealist Woman, is brought to the page by Josh Frank, and illustrated by Manuela Pertega. Tim Heidecker helped with the adaptation from the Dali and Marx screenplay. There are typical Marx Brothers bits amid swirling, phantasmagorical illustrations that suggest an acid trip. One can see why the cigar-chomping movie studio bosses balked at this avant-garde project. — Mordecai Specktor
