In the liner notes for her new album, Uncovered (Innova), Maya Beiser writes that Janis Joplin’s “unique, raw expression” gained her entry “into the inner shrine where until then only the likes of Bach and Schubert were allowed to enter.” On Uncovered, the “cello goddess” (The New Yorker), who was born in Israel, covers “Summertime,” which was a signature song for the late Texas-born blues belter. Other classic rock tunes — “Little Wing,” “Lithium,” “Kashmir” — get cello-ized on the CD. The arrangements by Evan Ziporyn “uncover” the power of these songs by Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Howlin’ Wolf, King Crimson, Muddy Waters and AC/DC. — M.S.
