LIVING BY THEIR WITS — Army investigator Sara Simon (Antje Traue) interrogates David Bermann (Moritz Bleibtreu), a Holocaust survivor living in a displaced persons camp, about his activities during the war, in Bye Bye Germany. In a winning performance, Bleibtreu leads a group of sardonic fellow survivors in moneymaking schemes designed to get them out of the DP camp in Frankfurt and to America. Director Sam Garbarski shares the screenwriting credit with Michel Bergmann for the film — a mix of comedy and drama, with Yiddish inflections — based on Bergmann’s novels Die Teilacher and Macholikes. Bye Bye Germany, mainly in German with subtitles, opens May 18 at the Lagoon Cinema in Minneapolis. — Mordecai Specktor
