PBS’ American Masters — Carole King: Natural Woman will premiere 8 p.m. CST Friday, Feb. 19 on TPT 2 (check local listings).
The documentary, which includes previously unseen footage, will delve into the hit singer-songwriter’s life and career — from 1960s New York to the music mecca of ’70s L.A. to the present.
Carole King will join collaborators and family in new interviews with friends and colleagues, including fellow songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Tapestry producer Lou Adler, drummer Russ Kunkel, guitarist Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, daughter and manager Sherry Goffin Kondor, lyricists Toni Stern and Carole Bayer Sager, and former manager Peter Asher.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of King’s landmark album, Tapestry, which was released in February 1971 and won four Grammy Awards. To date, more than 1,000 artists have recorded more than 400 of King’s compositions, resulting in 100 hit singles.
King has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is a recent Kennedy Center honoree. She is also the first woman to be awarded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
