“Poinciana,” the first song on pianist Aaron Goldberg’s enjoyable new album, At the Edge of the World (Sunnyside), features “embodirhythm,” percussion played on the body by drummer Leon Parker. I guess it’s on his own body. Goldberg’s fleet, swinging playing on these eight songs also is propelled by acclaimed bassist Matt Penman. There’s an homage in two songs to vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, who died in 2016; Goldberg’s cascading solo on Hutcherson’s “Isn’t This My Sound Around Me” evokes mallets running over the vibraphone bars. And “Manhã de Carnaval,” by Brazilian composer Luiz Bonfá and lyricist Antônio Maria, features a lovely rendition of the melody, with a scat-like vocal by Parker. By the way, Goldberg will play the Hopkins Center for the Arts on April 13, with the Joshua Redman Quartet. — Mordecai Specktor
