Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, Aviva Kempner’s acclaimed documentary about television pioneer Gertrude Berg, will be released next month. The two-DVD set will feature two hours of extras, including episodes of The Goldbergs, interviews (Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Ed Asner, Norman Lear et al.) and Berg’s Ed Sullivan Show monologue, “The Hanukah Bush.” Berg’s character, Molly Goldberg, and the show’s cast, portrayed a positive image of Jews on television. Berg’s creativity and versatility set the bar for other entertainers and paved the way for icons such as Oprah, Martha Stewart and Ellen DeGeneres — this Jewish dynamo essentially invented the sitcom.
