The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival opens tonight at 7 p.m. with Max Manus, a Norwegian film about the resistance to the Nazi occupation. In 2000, the American Jewish World wrote about one of the heroes of the Norwegian resistance, Gunnar Sønsteby, who will attend the opening night festivities. Sønsteby, who is portrayed in the fictional narrative film, and his comrades in the Norwegian resistance saved hundreds of Jews from the murderous Nazis by smuggling them across the border into Sweden. You can read the March 2000 AJW story about Sønsteby, who is now 91, HERE (4 Mb PDF file).
