The Minnesota Independent reports today that Rep. Michele Bachmann, addressing a Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) event in Los Angeles last week, “offered a candid view of her positions on Israel: Support for Israel is handed down by God and if the United States pulls back its support, America will cease to exist.”
The story quotes from Bachmann’s remarks (via the Israpundit blog):
I am convinced in my heart and in my mind that if the United States fails to stand with Israel, that is the end of the United States . . . [W]e have to show that we are inextricably entwined, that as a nation we have been blessed because of our relationship with Israel, and if we reject Israel, then there is a curse that comes into play. And my husband and I are both Christians, and we believe very strongly the verse from Genesis [Genesis 12:3], we believe very strongly that nations also receive blessings as they bless Israel. It is a strong and beautiful principle….
The Minnesota Independent story also mentions that the RJC recently hired fromer Sen. Norm Coleman, and that Bachmann will appear Friday night as the keynoter for the Take Back Washington event in Bismarck, No. Dakota.
Bachmann lived on a kibbutz in Israel many years ago, and has visited the Jewish state on several occasions. She attended a 2008 reception in Jerusalem hosted by the Minneapolis Jewish Federation’s Israel @60 Mission.
She declined an interview request from the American Jewish World at that time, and a subsequent interview request when she had returned from her Israel visit, which was sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council. — Mordecai Specktor
