Journey to Freedom will be screened on Oct. 9
Until 2006, only one American, Varian Fry, had ever been named as one of the Righteous Among the Nations (formerly called Righteous Gentiles). But in 2006, Rev. Waitstill and Martha Sharp received the posthumous award.
In 1939, this young Unitarian couple left their two young children and their home in Massachusetts, and went to Czechoslovakia, where they rescued hundreds of Jews. They then went on to France, where they again saved hundreds.
A new film titled Journey to Freedom: The Story of Martha and Waitstill Sharp will be shown 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 at the First Unitarian Church, 3400 Dupont Ave. S., Minneapolis. It is free and open to the public.
