Bye Bye Germany, an entertaining film that had a brief theatrical run in May at the Lagoon Cinema, is now available on DVD from Film Movement. Directed by Sam Garbarski, who shares a screenwriting credit with Michel Bergmann, the film, set in 1946, focuses on a group of wily Jewish survivors scheming to get out of a DP camp in Frankfurt and to America. One moneymaking ruse involves selling linens at inflated prices to credulous Germans. In a central story thread, alluring U.S. army investigator Sara Simon (Antje Traue) interrogates David Bermann (Moritz Bleibtreu) about how he got preferential treatment while interned in a concentration camp. Bye Bye Germany, mainly in Yiddish and German with English subtitles, is a sharply written and well-acted comedy, with trenchant philosophical overtones. — Mordecai Specktor
