Yale University Art Gallery has published the first two volumes of photographs by Lee Friedlander (born 1934). The two handsome, large-format volumes, Children: The Human Clay and Portraits: The Human Clay, are part of a new series of six publications that will be released over three years. Portraits provides a window into American culture over the past five decades, as Friedlander intimately captures prominent personalities ranging from poet Allen Ginsberg to musician Fats Domino. Featured on the cover of Portraits is the late American figure painter Sandra Fisher, who was photographed in London, in 1975. Also, acclaimed Minneapolis-based photographer Stuart Klipper, an occasional AJW contributor, appears twice in Portraits. Fans of art photography surely will want to linger over these amazing photos. — M.S.
