David Weiss is a brilliant trumpeter, leader, composer and arranger. He was a guiding influence in the comeback of jazz great Freddie Hubbard some years ago; and the first track on Weiss’ new album, When Words Fail (Motéma), “The Intrepid Hub,” is dedicated to the late jazz trumpeter. In his liner notes, Weiss acknowledges that the music — he wrote six of the eight tunes — “is about loss and the feelings that go with it, the pain, desolation and hopelessness.” However, Weiss says, “the music is also about lifting one out of that world, so it should also be about rebirth, hope and finding your way back.” The great songs and musicians on When Words Fail deliver plenty for your ears and your heart. — M.S.
