Last week’s top-grossing film in the U.S., Noah, is ripped from the pages of the Tanach.
Director Darren Aronofsky’s treatment of the story from Genesis is undoubtedly popular; however, the film has come under fire from some Christian fundamentalists for ostensibly suggesting the validity of evolution, and straying from the biblical text “to depict black magic and the occult.”
The film also has been banned in some Muslim countries, because it depicts Noah, peace be upon him, who is regarded as a prophet in Islam; and some religious commentators view such depictions as forbidden.
Critics generally seem to like Noah. It scores a solid 77 percent on the Tomatometer; although just 47 percent of general movie-goers are happy with it.
