Fans of Israeli author Etgar Keret likely will be entertained by his new story collection, Suddenly, a Knock on the Door, available in paperback from FSG Originals. The stories are mainly brief, two or three pages; they are replete with disturbing twists. For example, the title story has an author returning home to find a stranger on his sofa, brandishing a pistol and demanding to hear a story. Subsequent knocks on the door bring in a war vet also armed with a sidearm, and a pizza delivery guy with a cleaver. The writing is often cliché-ridden, but carries the reader along by the unexpected, surreal plot turns. — M.S.
