Hanuka Cover Contest Winner:
Levi Feller
This year marked the 20th annual AJW Hanuka Cover Contest, which inspired dozens of young artists in the community to reflect on the meaning of the Festival of Lights. There were many outstanding works of art, but one stood out from the rest.
We are proud to announce that Levi Feller is the winner of this year’s Hanuka Cover Contest.
Levi, who lives in West St. Paul, is in eighth grade at the Lubavitch Cheder Day School in St. Paul. During an interview at the AJW offices this week, he discussed his inspiration for the winning artwork.
“Basically it shows that all Jews are united when they light the Hanuka candles,” he said. “That’s one of the ideas of Hanuka, to be united, and the unity of the Jews. They’re all part of the menora.”
Levi said he wanted to show the unity of all Jews — no matter what they do or who they are. Among the professions represented on his menora are a firefighter, a doctor, a farmer and a construction worker.
His shamash, the candle that lights the others, is represented by a rabbi.
“He lights everyone’s light,” Levi said.
When asked what he would like to have as his own profession, Levi wasn’t entirely sure. But, he said, it would be something “probably towards the middle of the menora,” in reference to the rabbi.
At school, Levi enjoys studying history, Gemara and the Talmud. He also enjoys reading, football, biking, swimming and, of course, drawing and sketching.
Levi is the son of Rabbi Menachem Mendel and Nechama Dina Feller, and he has four brothers and three sisters.
Asked if he had anything to add, Levi said simply, “Happy Hanuka!”
As this year’s winner, Levi receives a gift card from Target, courtesy of the AJW. Levi and each of the runners-up also get a certificate suitable for framing.
And each winner receives a baseball-style cap with embroidered letters on the front, “AMERICAN JEWISH WORLD HANUKA COVER CONTEST WINNER,” and other Hanuka treats.
We thank all of the artists who entered our contest this year. You’re all winners in our book. We hope to see your work again next year!
