The 3 Cohens — Anat, Yuval and Avishai — play their horns (saxophones, clarinet and trumpet) unaccompanied on most of the 18 tracks that comprise their new album, Tightrope (Anzic). The siblings from Tel Aviv, who play together and with various other ensembles, have developed a sort of telepathic communication, so the interplay between soloing and supporting happens seamlessly. And the 3 Cohens have invited some guest artists: the wonderful pianist Fred Hersch on three numbers, expressive drummer Johnathan Blake and acclaimed bassist Christian McBride. Among the many treats on Tightrope are a rendition of Tadd Dameron’s bebop standard “Hot House”; the Thelonious Monk composition “I Mean You”; and a light, lively Dixieland version of “Indiana.” Tightrope offers a smorgasbord of listening pleasures. — M.S.
