New sounds from the Michaël Attias Quartet

Originally from Israel, jazz saxophonist Michaël Attias spent a good part of his youth right here in St. Louis Park. A questing musician, Attias combines diverse influences, from Moroccan tribal rhythms to Ornette Coleman, in his playing. His new album, Nerve Dance, will be available early next month from Clean Feed Records. Attias plays alto saxophone on the record, and is accompanied by highly accomplished bandmates, Aruán Ortiz, piano; John Hébert, bass; and Nasheet Waits, drums. The original songs range from melodic bop to more avant compositions that require open-eared listening. I’m not familiar with Attias’ previous recordings, but on the basis of Nerve Dance, I’d like to hear more — and it would be a gas to hear this group live. — Mordecai Specktor
