James Baldwin revealed as an American prophet

February is Black History Month, and it’s hard to think of a more appropriate film to view than Raoul Peck’s I Am Not Your Negro, a Magnolia Pictures release that opens locally Feb. 3. The documentary probes a never completed book project by James Baldwin, which looked at the lives of three of the author’s close friends, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. The three civil rights leaders were all assassinated in the 1960s. Interviews with Baldwin are intercut with archival news footage and movie representations of African-American life. Actor Samuel L. Jackson reads Baldwin’s words from the manuscript of Remember This House, which consisted of 30 completed pages at Baldwin’s death in 1987. — Mordecai Specktor
