Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) is widely considered to be the greatest violinist of all time. Itzhak Perlman, no slouch himself on the fiddle, called Heifetz “God.” You can judge for yourself — and perhaps start with The Magic of Jascha Heifetz (Song Classical), a three-CD set of the maestro’s late recordings remastered with the latest digital technology. In an essay, part of the 28-page booklet packaged with the set, Arthur Vered and John Anthony Maltese write that the collection “highlights the Heifetz magic by bringing together a broad cross-section of his stereo recordings.” The set includes concertos, and chamber music performances and recitals. In the recital category, Heifetz, plays six songs from Porgy and Bess, by the legendary George Gershwin. — Mordecai Specktor
