Golijov Azul coverMusic lovers with open ears will be dazzled by Golijov: Azul (Warner Classics), an album that features Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov’s sublime cello concerto. The title composition, “Azul” (“blue” in Spanish), was written in 2006, for acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. This is the first recording of the work, which is performed by Ma; The Knights, a Brooklyn-based chamber orchestra; and Eric Jacobsen, The Knights’ conductor and cellist. NPR music critic Tom Huizenga called the Golijov work “one of the finest cello concertos so far this century.” The album kicks off with “Ascending Bird,” a wondrous piece by Iranian composer Siamak Aghaei and Colin Jacobsen (Eric’s brother and co-artistic director of The Knights). Azul also includes works by Dvořák, Stockhausen and Sufjan Stevens. — Mordecai Specktor
