There’s a saying, “It’s your mind playing tricks on you.” Author Estelle Frankel, a licensed marriage counselor, family and child therapist and teacher of Jewish mysticism, admits that her mind got in the habit of “filling in the blanks” with the worst possible outcomes. Her husband remarked on her “genius for worry.” In The Wisdom of Not Knowing: Discovering a Life of Wonder by Embracing Uncertainty (Shambhala), Frankel draws on Kabbala and varied religious traditions to formulate “mindfulness” exercises to help manage worrisome thoughts. “My personal struggles with the unknown have helped me discover a realm of infinite beauty and radiant faith that I know are the key to joy and inner freedom,” she writes. — Mordecai Specktor
