A loving view of Buenos Aires’ Jews

If you can’t afford the cost of a trip to Argentina, director Daniel Burman’s The Tenth Man, available on DVD from Kino Lorber, offers an intimate glimpse of a little known corner of Buenos Aires, the city’s Jewish neighborhood called Once. (The film’s Spanish title, El Rey Del Once, translates as “the king of Once.”) Ariel (Alan Sabbagh) grew up in Once and returns after many years at the behest of his father, Usher (Usher Barilka), who has opened a charity catering to the needs of the quarter’s elderly impoverished residents. Ariel ends up running errands for his father, and meets free-spirited Eva (Julieta Zylberberg), in this warmhearted story about reconciling with your homeland and people. — Mordecai Specktor
